R.Power Finalizes Construction of 127 MW Scornicesti BESS in Romania
European independent power producer R.Power is entering the final construction phase of its first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Romania. The Scornicesti BESS, boasting a capacity of 127 MW and 254 MWh, represents a major step forward for the company's expansion in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).
Project Specifications and Timeline
Construction of the standalone facility commenced in the spring of 2026 under the management of EPC contractor Parapet. The site now features 46 advanced battery units and 23 containerised medium-voltage transformer stations. The project is scheduled to connect to the national transmission grid, operated by Transelectrica, by late 2026 or early 2027.
Strategic Financing and Partnerships
To realize this ambitious project, R.Power secured a comprehensive €46 million financing package in June 2026. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided €44 million in investment and bridge financing, while the Polish development bank BGK issued a €2.3 million bank guarantee.
The Scornicesti facility is co-owned through a joint venture with France’s Eiffel Investment Group, and long-term optimization is contracted to regional trading partner GEN-I, ensuring robust commercial management.
This project is a cornerstone of R.Power’s broader European strategy. The company’s BESS portfolio in operations and under construction across the CEE region currently stands at 0.9 GW/3 GWh. Additionally, R.Power holds an impressive 0.7 GW/2.8 GWh of commercialised, ready-to-build projects, alongside over 13 GW of grid-secured utility-scale BESS and renewable projects across Poland, Romania, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.
