Tenevo Hybrid Renewable Energy Complex Inaugurated in Bulgaria

Renalfa IPP and Eurowind Energy have officially inaugurated the Tenevo hybrid complex in South-Eastern Bulgaria, a massive facility combining 242 MWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity with two co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities totaling 311 MW/773 MWh. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to generate 332 GWh of clean electricity annually, with Solarpro Holding acting as the primary EPC contractor.

InvestEU Backing and Financial Structure

The monumental project is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI). The EBRD and RBI provided EUR 50 million and EUR 53 million, respectively, for the PV portion of the complex. Additionally, an extra EUR 60 million for the second phase of the BESS is expected to be signed shortly.

Notably, Tenevo is among the first projects in Bulgaria to benefit from a guarantee under the European Union’s InvestEU programme, highlighting the bloc's commitment to supporting sustainable infrastructure in member states. The total investment across all phases of the complex is expected to exceed EUR 500 million.

Future Expansion and Just Transition

The developers have ambitious plans to further expand the hybrid platform by adding over 250 MW of wind capacity in the near future. This hybridization strategy aims to maximize the utilization of existing grid connections and significantly strengthen regional grid resilience.

The site's location near a transitioning coal region adds profound relevance to Bulgaria's just transition and regional economic transformation.

By integrating solar, wind, and massive battery storage, the Tenevo complex serves as a premier example of how hybrid renewable assets can drive decarbonization and support the economic revitalization of former coal regions in the EU.
